SHASHI THAROOR OF UNITED NATIONS HONORED BY 2003 PRESIDENT OF INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC RELATIONS ASSOCIATIONNew York, NY, February 5, 2004....  Ceyda Aydede of Turkey, 2003 President of the International Public Relations Association (IPRA), presented the President's Award for "outstanding contribution to world understanding" to Shashi Tharoor, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information in her last official act as president of the worldwide public relations body."Mr. Tharoor and the UN Department of Public Information (DPI) have excelled in the worldwide communications work they do to promote international understanding in these tumultuous times," Ms. Aydede said.  She encouraged IPRA members to assist in communicating the UN messages of peace and tolerance.  IPRA is a non-governmental organization (NGO) in consultative status with DPI.Mr. Tharoor has lead DPI since January 2001.  In this capacity, he is in charge of the United Nations communications strategy, with particular responsibility for ensuring the coherence and effectiveness of the United Nations' external message.The IPRA President's Award is presented annually at the discretion of the President, with approval of the Board of Directors, to an organization or an individual to recognize communications achievement.  Recent honorees have included The Queen's Golden Jubilee Committee, J.K. Rowling, Rotary International for Polio Plus Programme and Aung San Suu Kyi. IPRA will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2005.  The Association has 1125 members in 102 countries.
