Authentic Glow Worms: l’Intelligenza Artificiale come terza presenza nelle Relazioni Pubbliche

English version

In a sense, the importance of Public Relations within organizations and institutions of various kinds can be attributed to its ability to indicate when it is potentially possible to proceed with what one had intended to do. This is because, in an increasingly complex, fragmented, and chaotic context, it becomes ever more difficult to understand the strategy for engaging with the public. In this regard, both in terms of relationships with others and strategic decisions, technological advancements—led today by Artificial Intelligence (AI)—have greatly contributed to simplifying and streamlining the practices that were standard in the profession until the last century.

Although this automation has had many positive implications, with the advent of AI—especially considering its effects on Public Relations—some critical issues have emerged. In fact, as Catherine Arrow points out in her article on Authentic Glow Worms, this tool—previously regarded as merely a spare “third wheel”—has become a full-fledged “third presence” that we can no longer ignore and with which we are forced to interact more and more frequently. A new dimension has thus emerged: one where algorithms break the rules of the past in interactions between people; where reality is all too often manipulated or distorted for secondary purposes; and where the profit motives of a few tech companies no longer allow progress to go hand in hand with human well-being.

Therefore, not only to restore the credibility of Public Relations, but also to try to reduce polarization and misinformation in the interest of the entire community, we must return to an approach that places human beings at the center as essential actors and views AI not as a substitute for them, but as a tool to support their well-being and development.
